Breakwater's Introduction to Sailing Course is designed to teach the fundamentals of sailing, including how sailboats work, how to sail, parts of the boat, some basic navigation, and safety skills. This is the perfect course for those looking to gain a basic knowledge of sailing or for those returning to the sport looking for a refresher.

Some topics to be covered include: the racing rules, understanding the race course, starting, racing fundamentals, and basic racing tactics. This is the perfect course for those looking to gain a basic knowledge of racing or for those returning to the sport looking for a refresher.

Dave Perry is well known for his enthusiastic and engaging teaching style for sailors of all ages and levels, as well as highly respected for his deep knowledge of the sport of Sailing. He is a Collegiate All-American and 5x US Match Racing National Champion, as well as one of the sport’s leading coaches. He was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2020.

Dave is excited to return to the Breakwater Yacht Club to discuss how to play the game at the starts and around the race course. In the morning session, Dave will cover the basic rules and tactics needed to be confident and successful on the starting line and around the course. In the afternoon, Dave will do a deeper dive into the more advanced tactics on the starting line and around the course, for sailors with more experience.

Dave encourages sailors of all abilities, or who normally crew, to join us because knowing the rules and tactical moves better will dramatically increase their racing enjoyment.

Race Committee Fundamentals: is a US Sailing designed course for people who want to learn the basics of race committee work. You’ll learn from the best - experienced race officers who know what it takes to run great races.

Through a variety of instructional strategies – direct instruction, small group work and hands-on activities – your volunteers will learn about these topics and more:

Come get certified or re-certified for CPR / AED First Aid at the Breakwater clubhouse. Improving safety on the water is a critical part of our mission. We hope to get everyone to get trained in CPR and AED.

Re-certification is only valid for individuals who have been previously CPR/AED First Aid certified by the American Heart Association.
