One Design

Race With Us!

No matter your level of sailing experience or competitiveness, Breakwater has a one-design fleet just right for you.  Club or loaner boats are often available, and one-design sailing offers a great way to learn the sport of sailing while making friends at the Breakwater. We have active fleets of JY15s, Lasers, Sunfish, and J70s, and starting summer 2021, J/24s as well.

JY15

Every Sunday from May to October, Breakwater hosts Sunday One-Design racing aboard JY15s off Haven’s Beach in Sag Harbor. The season is divided into three parts, Spring (Late April/June), Summer (July/August), and Fall (September/October), with awards given out at the end of each season. Races begin at 3:30 p.m. and are family-friendly and informally competitive.

The JY15 is a two-person dinghy, which is easy to sail, and ideal for developing skills.  The top boats are often husband/wife or parent/child teams.  JY15 sailing is a fun boat both for beginners and experts.

New sailors are always welcome, and loaner boats are usually available.  In addition, Breakwater’s fleet of JY15s is available for charter under the boat usage program.  Contacts; Bud Rogers (wrogers@cravath.com) or the Sailing Director, Sean Elliott (sailingdirector@breakwateryc.org)

Lasers

During the winter, the Breakwater offers a frostbiting laser series and hosts the annual Ice Breaker Regatta that attracts sailors from Connecticut and up-island.   The winter series is sailed inside the breakwater under the watchful eye of our committee boat. The first gun is 2:00 pm for frostbiting.  During the Summer, an informal group of sailors meets every Friday at 4:00 pm to race on Noyac Bay.  In addition, Breakwater supports two to three Laser regattas each summer, which attract sailors from up-island, Connecticut, and New Jersey, and sometime further away.  The Laser is a one-person boat that is raced worldwide, including in the Olympics.  New sailors are always welcome, and loaner boats are usually available.  Contacts:  Bud Rogers (wrogers@cravath.com); Tim Culver (tculver@culverlaw.com); Marty Knab (kankron@hotmail.com) or the Sailing Director, Sean Elliott (sailingdirector@breakwateryc.org)

Rockets / Sunfish

All year long, Breakwater sponsors Sunfish racing on Sunday mornings.  During the Winter, the racing is inside the breakwater, and during the summer, the racing occurs just outside the breakwater.  The first gun is 10:30 am.  The Sunfish is an easy-to-sail one-person boat, and the Breakwater fleet emphasizes less competitive inclusive sailing.  To add excitement to the performance of the boat, members of the Breakwater fleet have all acquired an improved sail specially designed by the fleet captain, Scott Sandell.  The fleet welcomes new sailors, and loaner boats are usually available.  Contacts:  Scott Sandell  (deepwater@optonline.net); Marty Knab (kankron@hotmail.com) or the Sailing Director, Sean Elliott (sailingdirector@breakwateryc.org)

J70s

The J70 is the most popular small keelboat one-design racing boat in the world.  Breakwater’s fleet of J70s races one-design as part of our Wednesday Night series and separately on particular summer Saturday afternoons.  Fleet members are always looking for people to round out their 4-person crews and a non-technical boat layout makes it ideal for both beginner and advanced sailors.  Look for announcements of scheduled J70 events and opportunities to join a J70 crew on a Wednesday night.  Contact Jim Vos (jim.vos123@gmail.com) or our Sailing Director, Sean Elliott (sailingdirector@breakwateryc.org).

J24s

Three J24s have recently been donated to the Breakwater and will be available for cruising and racing to start in spring 2020.  The J/24 is an older design with a traditional symmetric spinnaker.  Ideal for learning (or improving) the skills to sail much larger keelboats, the J24s will be available as loaner boats for both the spring/summer/fall Wednesday night series and cruising anytime. Contact Steve Clarke (sclarke@sperrytentshamptons.com) or our Sailing Director, Sean Elliott (sailingdirector@breakwateryc.org).
