Sprit Fest Final Results
PRESS
RELEASE ------- On Saturday Sag Harbor took a nautical
step backward and a regatta step forward. Borrowing time from it’s
seafaring days, Noyac Bay was again littered with sailing vessels,
but this time they were sleeker designs – specifically J80’s,
J105’s and J109’s. The occasion was Sprit Fest, a new
JBoat regatta sponsored by Breakwater Yacht Club which attracted
35 such yachts from various seaports along the eastern seaboard.
Each yacht competed against only it’s own type, the essence
of one-design racing. The regatta was the largest non-dinghy one-design
racing event ever held in local waters.
Formerly
the J80 Long Island Championship, it was renamed ‘Sprit Fest’
this year and expanded to include the J105’s and J109’s.
Both yachts are 35 feet long and represent two of the most competitively
raced classes in the United States.
Sprit
Fest instantly established credibility by attracting industry big
names. National, North American & Olympic champions, sailmakers,
and riggers all partook in racing. Rod Johnstone, JBoat’s
legendary designer, traveled over from Connecticut to observe the
competition of hulls he architected.
The
weather couldn’t have been more ideal for racing. Saturday
began with light southerly’s and gradually built throughout
the day to 15 knots - providing racers a myriad of racing conditions
to exert their skills. Three races were completed. Sunday picked
up where Saturday left off and wind continued to build for the last
two races. Shifty conditions throughout the entire regatta tested
patience and abilities. Race Committee PRO Bill Kirkpatrick and
International Judges Bruce Cook, Bill Ludlum and Phil Pape presided
over racing.
Breakwater
Yacht Club’s Saturday night barbecue, was heavily attended
by 250 sailors, sponsors and families. The night featured Harry
Manko’s live video of Saturday racing for all to enjoy.
The
J109’s had the largest class consisting of 17 boats. Special
attention focused on these races since the J109 Sprit Fest winner
would also be crowned the 2007 East Coast Champion. Stephen Tedeschi
and his team aboard ‘Tastes Like Chicken’ ultimately
won the weekend event by scoring the lowest points, similar to golf,
to capture the win. Rick Lyall and ‘Storm’ placed second
followed by Bill Sweetser’s ‘Rush’ taking third.
Local
boat ‘Instant Karma’, skippered by David Betts, won
the J105 Division followed by Bruce Tait’s ‘Buckaroo’
and John Sutherland’s ‘She’s the Boss’.
Blake Fleetwood sailed his J80 ‘USA 352’ onto win the
14-strong J80 class followed by John DiMatteo’s ‘Christe’
in second place and Dr. Robert Schwartz’s ‘Lucky Frog’
in third.
Sprit
Fest was a huge step forward in progressing Breakwater Yacht Club
as a premiere racing destination on the East Coast. The regatta
owes it’s success, in large part, to the numerous volunteers
and supportive sponsors: Sag Harbor Yacht Yard, Sag Harbor Yacht
Club, JBoats, Johnstone Yacht Sales, UK Sailmakers, North Sails,
Aksia and AT Conference.
