Every Sunday from May to October, BYC hosts Sunday One-Design racing aboard JY15s off Haven’s Beach in Sag Harbor. The season is divided into three parts, Spring (May/June) Summer (July/August) and Fall (September/October) with awards given out at the end of each season. Races, which begin at 3 p.m., are family friendly and informally competitive.
The JY15 is a two-person dinghy, which is easy to sail, and ideal for developing skills. JY15 sailing is a fun boat both for beginners and experts.
With six races on any given Sunday, skippers have several opportunities to perfect their starts — an important aspect of learning to sail. For that reason, the Sunday One-Design series attracts sailors at all skill levels — including high school students and families. Newcomers are welcome and experienced sailors are always willing to offer tips while perfecting their own skills.
Afterwards, sailors traditionally gather to talk about how the day of racing went. To quote fleet captain and BYC member Bud Rogers, a huge supporter of the JY15s, “Sundays are for JYs.”
During the winter the BYC offers a laser frostbiting series and hosts the annual Ice Breaker Regatta that attracts sailors from Connecticut and up-island.
Most participants sail their own JY15s, but BYC members can also use a club JY15 for One Design racing through the clubs bot usage program.
