Each summer, the Breakwater Yacht Club hosts an Adventuresail Regatta for Girls. The event is sponsored by the National Women’s Sailing Association and the Town of Southampton. The goal of the program is to expose at-risk girls ages 9 to 16 to new sporting experiences and thereby build self-esteem.
And sailing is certainly new for many of these girls who come from nearby school districts as well as Long Island Big Brothers and Big Sisters Clubs and Project Most. The girls spend their day crewing aboard the BYC’s members’ boats. The Adventuresail Regatta involves the girls in all aspects of sailing, from racing around the buoys to learning the basics of boat handling — including helming, trimming sails and hoisting spinnakers.
After a fun and competitive day on the water, the event ends with an after race party in the BYC clubhouse where the young sailors are recognized with an awards ceremony. A number of BYC sailing scholarships are also made available to Adventuresail participants.
